The story of a newborn with a complex heart defect.
We first met Lo Tian in the cardiac intensive care unit. At this time, he was a 12-day-old baby who was born with a complex heart malformation. It was a transposition of the great arteries: This means that the two largest vessels, which are directly connected to the heart, are reversed.
Thanks to comprehensive prenatal diagnostics through regular ultrasound examinations during pregnancy, the diagnosis was already clear before the birth. This meant that the necessary preparations could be made to provide the baby with the best possible support after birth.
Lo Tian was admitted to the intensive care unit 20 minutes after the birth. There, important drug therapies were initiated and close monitoring was set up to bridge the time until the operation.
Lo Tian was finally operated on just a few days after birth. Dr Ladin's team was able to successfully correct the anatomical malformations so that the heart could function as normally as possible. This operation was a decisive step towards improving the baby's prognosis and quality of life.
The recovery is going well so far. Dr Ladin's cardiac surgery team, together with the specialised cardiac intensive care unit, has drawn up a clear plan for Lo Tian's continued care and regular check-ups. The family is deeply grateful to the entire team for the medical care their little boy received at Kantha Bopha Hospital.
Best wishes from Siem Reap
