During our internship at Kantha Bopha Hospital in Siem Reap, we were able to rotate in the paediatric surgery department, among others. We gained experience in minor procedures such as draining abscesses and correcting deformities through to complex open heart surgery, such as that required for Lo Tian. We have already written a detailed blog post about his case.
The challenging neurosurgical procedures performed by Prof. Ratanak's team were certainly another highlight. He was always keen to give us an insight into his specialism and we were able to learn an incredible amount from him. That's why we decided to introduce him in our latest blog post.
Prof. Ratanak began his surgical career in 1994 as a general paediatric surgeon before specialising in paediatric neurosurgery at the Necker-Enfants Clinic in Paris. Since 2010, he has been working as a paediatric neurosurgeon at Kantha Bopha Children's Hospital in Siem Reap. The acute shortage of neurosurgeons in his home country motivated Prof. Ratanak to take this path.
Prof. Ratanak also emphasises the importance of new findings and interdisciplinary collaboration in order to improve the quality of neurosurgical care. He is convinced that expanding knowledge and regular updates in medical expertise are crucial.
He draws his daily motivation from the recognition of his work by superiors, patients and their families and is proud of his team's successes
Best regards from Siem Reap
