We have grown professionally and personally

After two intensive months at Kantha Bopha Children's Hospital in Siem Reap, it is time for us to say goodbye. Our assignment here was full of many beautiful but also sad moments, touching encounters and instructive experiences that will leave a lasting impression on both of us.

We were able to make some very good new friends here, both among the staff and outside the hospital. These friendships mean a lot to us, and it is difficult to leave these people behind. It is not easy to say goodbye, because we will miss the shared conversations, laughter and dialogue very much.

We were particularly impressed by the tireless dedication of all the staff on site: doctors, nurses, security staff, cleaners and many more who are needed to ensure the operation of such a large hospital. We were very impressed by their commitment and discipline. The strength and resilience of the children and their families moved us deeply and showed us that it is important not to lose hope even in very difficult situations.

We now have another part of our elective study year ahead of us. Rachel is continuing her training with an internship in pediatrics at Winterthur Cantonal Hospital. And Jan will be working as a junior assistant in neurosurgery at the Hirslanden Clinic in Zurich. We are looking forward to experiencing the differences and peculiarities of the respective specialities in Switzerland and being able to draw a direct comparison with our experiences in Cambodia.

Our time here in Cambodia has not only allowed us to grow professionally, but also personally. We are grateful for everything we were able to experience and learn. A big thank you to all the staff, the families and our new friends who welcomed us into their world - we will never forget this time.

Best wishes from Siem Reap

Rachel and Jan
