Anett will be joining our team in Cambodia from January 2025. The medical student will be working in our children's hospital in Siem Reap for two months. Here she introduces herself.
Anett Susanne Romancuk, 24, Zurich
I knew from an early age that I wanted to study medicine. For me, this decision was never a question, but a matter of course, as I have always felt the need to help people. I am particularly fascinated by the versatility of the different specialist areas and the constant progress in the medical field. My goal is to later work in a specialist field in which I have regular direct contact with patients. Another motivation for this decision was the fact that both my mother and my sister are doctors, so I became familiar with the profession and the associated challenges at an early age.
I was particularly motivated by the desire to work in Siem Reap in order to gain an in-depth insight into the healthcare system in a developing country. I wanted to understand how the healthcare system there differs from the Swiss model. In Switzerland, we are in the privileged position of having access to almost unlimited resources. In Siem Reap, I want to learn how comprehensive and high-quality healthcare is possible even with limited resources. I see this experience as a unique opportunity to expand my knowledge and gain new perspectives. I am particularly interested in the differences in surgical methods, as well as the specific medical conditions that are common in Cambodia. Experiencing something with your own eyes is far more instructive and impressive than just seeing it in theory in lectures and pictures.
I'm really looking forward to the two months I'll be spending in pediatric surgery and obstetrics at the Children's Hospital. My aim is to learn as much as possible during this time, in particular to acquire practical skills and to develop my competence as a future doctor. After this experience, I hope to start my professional life with more knowledge and greater confidence in my own abilities. The contact with children and the insight into pediatric surgery is a particularly valuable experience for me. In the previous two months, I had already worked in pediatric surgery at the Children's Hospital in Zurich. What impressed me most there were the way children deal with serious health problems. Children have a completely different attitude and approach to their illness than adults, which is extremely important for a treating doctor to take into account. Although I have some concerns about the language barrier, I am still looking forward to a close and instructive collaboration with the team.
Best regards
Anett
