Morgane will be joining our team in Cambodia from November 2024. The medical student will be working at our children's hospital in Siem Reap for two months. Here she introduces herself.
Morgane Lercher, 23, from Niederglatt ZH
I know it may not sound very original, but I've wanted to be a doctor since I was a little girl. At the time, of course, I knew nothing about the profession and had no idea why I should choose this path. Over time, I discovered how interested I was in the functioning and structure of the human body. I also found the diseases that can be associated with this and their treatment very exciting. I also discovered how much I enjoyed interacting with people, especially children, and working with my hands. I'm sure you can imagine which school subjects I enjoyed the most: Science and ‘Handsgi’ = handicrafts. :)
I would also like to tell you why I would like to spend part of my elective year at the hospital in Siem Reap. Spending two months in a foreign country, getting to know a different healthcare system, seeing and treating diseases that are rare elsewhere, dealing with resources that are limited, getting to know a new culture and new people - these are all experiences that are very interesting to me personally and from which I can learn a lot. Of course, I'm also a little nervous because it's a big step into the unknown. I don't yet know how I will communicate with the patients, because most of them only speak Khmer. And I don't know whether I will be a helpful support there. But I'm confident, because I've heard lots of positive things from Rachel and Jan, who are already there. I'm really looking forward to it!
Best regards
Morgane
